What happens to a pokemon being transferred to Diamond, Pearl, etc. when holding the ten question mark item?

I bought a used fire red game and the previous owner cheated. She (I know it's a she because of the name) had a ten question mark item (and 7 master balls XD) in her bag and I read that if you transfer a pokemon holding that item it will become "glitched." What does that mean exactly?
